About the artists
Darren Young
Darren Young, since leaving graduate school and going to Colorado in 1999, has been in pursuit of painting the effects that man and nature have on landscape. Now that he has moved to Rock Hill, SC he is painting areas in this region that strike a formal response. It sometimes may be because of color, light or an interesting architectural shape.
He considers himself primarily a, “painterly realist” landscape painter. Darren starts the majority of his paintings on-site and usually finishes the canvas in his studio. His primary focus in paintings is trying to get a sense of light into the painting while using intense color and strong contrast. Trying to evoke a strong sense of emotion Darren uses many different kinds of brush marks on the canvas, occasionally using printmaking rollers directly onto the canvas to get marks different from the conventional “look” of the brush.
Darren obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from East Carolina University and his Masters of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University. He has a distinguished art-teaching career, having taught at the Indiana University, the University of Colorado and several community colleges.
